Across the country, more women than ever are stepping into roles in law enforcement, fire, and EMS. They’re leading units, commanding respect, and redefining what leadership looks like on the front line.

Yet for too long, their uniforms haven’t reflected this progress. Instead, they’ve typically been provided with uniforms that are scaled down from men’s cuts — boxy, restrictive, and impractical alternatives that don’t match the way women move, serve, and perform. That isn’t just a comfort issue. It’s a confidence issue.

Uniforms shape perception. They influence how professionals carry themselves, how they’re perceived by others, and how effectively they perform. A uniform designed without women in mind sends a silent message: you were an afterthought.

Flying Cross has long believed this is wrong and pioneered the effort to change things for the better.

Listening before designing

Recruiting and retaining women in public safety has never been more critical. Today, women represent roughly 12% of law enforcement officers nationwide, and that number continues to grow.  As agencies continue to face challenges in recruiting and retaining top talent, it’s unacceptable that ill-fitting gear remains a major barrier for half the population.

Through years of focus groups, wear tests, and direct collaboration with women across police, fire, EMS, and corrections as well as other public service sectors, Flying Cross built a new foundation for female uniform design: The ProX Signature Fit.

Unlike legacy “unisex” or scaled-down male patterns, The ProX Signature Fit starts from the ground up — with female body data, performance movement analysis, and real-world testing by active-duty professionals.

Small design details make a big difference. Each design was shaped by active feedback from women in uniform and addresses feedback about comfort, utility belt placement, mobility, and professional appearance under pressure.

Beyond appearance — building confidence and authority

When a uniform supports the person wearing it, it enhances both confidence and credibility. Proper fit promotes better focus, less fatigue, and greater physical readiness. It allows officers and responders to move freely, maintain composure, and command authority in every interaction.

Better design doesn’t just improve daily experience — it impacts retention, recruitment, and culture.

It’s also a signal — to peers, to the public, and to future recruits — that every member of the team matters. Agencies that invest in proper women’s uniforms send a message of inclusion and respect that can directly improve recruitment and retention.

Representing all who serve — and designing for what’s next

For Flying Cross, designing for women is not a niche initiative — it’s an essential part of representing all who serve. Our design teams continue to collaborate directly with field professionals through focus groups, feedback sessions, and ongoing product development.

And as the workforce evolves, so will the uniform. New fabrics, sustainability initiatives, and expanded ProX Signature Fit offerings are already in development to ensure performance and inclusivity continue hand-in-hand.

Because empowerment doesn’t start with a slogan. It starts with design that works.

We invite women in public safety — and the leaders who support them — to share experiences, insights, and challenges as we continue to advance fit, function, and respect across every uniform we make.
